Kitami Mountains - Kitamisanchi

A mountain range in northeastern Hokkaido. It spreads parallel to the Okhotsk coast in the east, slopes steeply toward the central basin in the west, borders the Ishikari Mountains in the south, and is bounded by the Abashiri River valley in the southeast. It is part of the Ezo mountain range, but unlike other mountain ranges, it is divided into several massifs. From the north, the Poronupuri Mountains, the northern, central, and southern mountain ranges are lined up, and the altitude increases toward the south. Most of the range is subdued and under 1000 meters, but there are some parts in the south that show the appearance of a mature mountain range. High mountains such as Teshiodake (1558 meters) and Shokotsudake (1345 meters) are remnants of igneous rocks that are resistant to erosion. Igneous activity has formed metal deposits such as gold and mercury, and in the past, some of Japan's leading mines, such as Itomuka and Kounomai, were in operation here. Gentle periglacial slopes are seen in many places, and extensive marine terraces have developed along the coast of the Sea of ​​Okhotsk, covering heavy clay soils with low agricultural productivity.

北海道北東部の山地。東のオホーツク海岸に並行して広がり、西は中央盆地列に向かって急斜し、南は石狩山地に接し、南東は網走(あばしり)川河谷で限られている。蝦夷山系(えぞさんけい)の一部を構成するが、他の山地とは違って、いくつかの塊状山地に分かれる。北からポロヌプリ山地、北部・中部・南部の各山地が並び、南に行くにしたがって高度を増す。大部分は1000メートル以下の従順山地であるが、南部には壮年山地の様相を示す部分もある。天塩岳(てしおだけ)（1558メートル）や渚滑岳(しょこつだけ)（1345メートル）などの高山は、侵食に強い火成岩類からなる残丘である。火成作用によって金、水銀などの金属鉱床が形成され、かつてはイトムカ、鴻ノ舞(こうのまい)などわが国有数の鉱山が操業していた。周氷河性の緩斜面が各所にみられ、オホーツク海沿岸には広い海成段丘が発達して、農業生産性の低い重粘土質土壌をのせている。
