...(2) Methods for preventing scouring: Wood-sinking method (Fig. c), which attaches weighted bales to trees and places them over scouring points; frame-insertion method (Fig. d), which covers scouring points with gabions (cylindrical cages woven in a tortoise-shell pattern and filled with stones); rubble method (Fig. e), which piles bales of sand on the back slope of the levee to compensate for the reduction in the levee cross section caused by scouring. (3) Methods for preventing water leakage: Kamadan method (Fig. f), which uses water pressure to prevent the expansion of the leakage opening in the ground inside the levee and drains the water so that the inside of the levee does not become water-filled; Tsuki-no-wa method (similar to Kamadan method), which is used for preventing water leakage from the back slope; packed bales of sand that fill the leakage opening on the river surface; and matting method (also used to prevent scouring) which covers the leakage surface on the river surface with matting. (4) Methods for preventing the collapse of the back slope: Upright gabion work, which erects gabions on the back slope to cover it, pile-driving and stacking sumo ring work, which drives piles into the back slope and lines it up, the sumo ring tuyere method, which stacks sumo rings on the back slope, and tsuchimawashi work.
