A vast plain that spreads across the eastern part of England. It is also known simply as the Fens, meaning marshland. It lies from the west coast of the Wash, an inlet of the North Sea, to the four counties of Lincolnshire, Cambridgeshire, Suffolk, and Norfolk on the south coast, with a maximum length of about 117 km from north to south and a maximum width of about 58 km from east to west, and a total area of about 3,400 km2. It was formed by the filling up of the Wash, and with the exception of scattered slight elevations, the entire area is lowland with an elevation of less than 15 m above sea level.
