Originally meaning "conqueror" in Spanish, it specifically refers to the Spanish adventurers who conquered North and South America in the early 16th century. Representative figures are H. Cortes, who destroyed the Aztecs, and F. Pizarro, who destroyed the Incas. While they were greedy for gold and treasure as they acquired new territories, they also had a sense of mission to spread Christianity to the people of the unknown world. After the conquest was completed, they came into conflict with the royal family over the encomiendas.
