...Mountain villages used to be isolated from other areas due to transportation barriers, and they were self-sufficient and practiced slash-and-burn agriculture. However, with the spread of the commodity economy, they began to cultivate commercial crops such as tobacco, Mitsumata, tea, and konjac. In particular, the cultivation of a native variety of tobacco called "Awa-ba" has a history dating back to the early modern period, and while tobacco cultivation in other prefectures is a side job, it is a full-time occupation. However, the labor productivity of these commercial crops is extremely low, which is why there is a rapid population outflow.
