A Shingon sect Chisan temple located on Mount Godai in Kochi City. It is called Godaisan Konjikiin. The principal image is Manjusri Bodhisattva. It is commonly known as Tosa Manjusri. It is the 31st temple of the 88 Shikoku Pilgrimage. According to temple legend, it was founded by Gyoki in 724 (Jinki 1), and was rebuilt by Kukai during the Daido period (806-810), who became the founder of the temple's revival. As Yamazaki Ansai wrote in his Shoro-ki (Church Tower Record) during the Kan'ei period (1624-1644), the temple is located in a tranquil and scenic location overlooking the Kyuuko Bay. It has magnificent buildings, including the main hall (Muromachi period, designated as an important cultural property of the country). The temple treasures include many sculptures designated as important national cultural properties, such as a wooden statue of Manjusri Bodhisattva and five attendant statues, and a standing statue of Amida Nyorai. There is also a memorial museum of botanist Makino Tomitaro on the temple grounds. [Hiromune Mashiba] Main hall (nationally designated important cultural property).
