Japanese: アントニウス[パドバの](英語表記)Antonius
Antonius (of Padua)
1195‐1231
A saint and Doctor of the Church who died near Padua, Italy. His first name was Ferdinand. Born into a distinguished family in Lisbon, he joined the Augustinian canon at the age of 15, but moved to Coimbra in 1212. While studying there, he was moved by the sight of the remains of five Franciscans who had been martyred in Morocco passing through the town in 1220, and became a Franciscan thereafter, taking the name Antonius. He was active in Italy from 1221 onwards, and was widely revered by the people not only for his eloquence and scholarship, but also for his devotion to poverty.
