Gyeongsang Province

Japanese: 慶尚道 - けいしょうどう

A region in the southeastern part of the Korean peninsula. One of the eight provinces of Korea, it is also called the Yeongnam region. Currently, in terms of administrative divisions in Korea, it is divided into four parts: Gyeongsangnam-do, Gyeongsangbuk-do, Daegu Metropolitan City, and Busan Metropolitan City. The population of Gyeongsangbuk-do (capital city: Daegu) is 2,775,922, Gyeongsangnam-do (capital city: Changwon) is 3,958,540, Daegu City is 2,485,977, and Busan City is 3,892,972 (all as of 1995). The total population of the four regions is 13,113,411, which is more than 28% of the total population of Korea.

The 1,000m-high Sobaek Mountains border the area to the north and west, while the Taebaek Mountains run broadly across the east.
