The history of expressways began in the United States with the parkways, which were roads built along with the construction of strips of parkland and prohibited commercial vehicles such as trucks and buses from passing through. However, full-fledged modern expressways began with the construction of the Autobahn in Germany after Hitler came to power in 1933.
