An electrode that contains gaseous substances among the substances involved in the electrode reaction. It is also called a gas electrode. It is often constructed so that a chemically inert metal electrode such as platinum or gold is inserted into a solution and the gas in question is passed over the electrode surface. Examples include the hydrogen electrode, oxygen electrode, and chlorine electrode. Pressure has a large effect on the equilibrium electrode potential of this electrode. A cell made by combining gas electrodes (for example, an acid-hydrogen fuel cell, an acid-alkali cell, etc.) is called a gas cell. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
