Law of gaseous reaction

This is an experimental fact showing that when both reactants and products in a chemical reaction are gases, the volumes of those gases measured under isothermal and isobaric conditions result in a simple integer ratio. It is also called Gay-Lussac's second law or the law of gas volumes. It was experimentally confirmed by Gay-Lussac of France in 1805, and generalized in 1808. It played a historical role in providing the basis for stoichiometry, and is still of great educational value today. For example, in the reaction that produces ammonia from nitrogen and hydrogen, the ratio between their volumes is 1:3:2, which corresponds to each coefficient in the chemical reaction equation _N2 + _3H2 - → _2NH3 .

化学反応において、その反応物と生成物がともに気体であるときには、それらの気体の体積を等温・等圧の条件で測定すると簡単な整数比になる実験事実を示したもの。ゲイ・リュサックの第二法則、あるいは気体体積の法則ともよばれる。1805年フランスのゲイ・リュサックが実験的に確認、08年一般化された。化学量論の基礎を与えた点で歴史的な役割を果たし、現在でも教育的に重要な効果をもっている。たとえば、窒素と水素からアンモニアを生ずる反応において、それらの体積の間には1対3対2の比が成立し、化学反応式N₂＋3H₂―→2NH₃における各係数と対応している。
