Tanaka Manufacturing (telegraph factory) opened by Tanaka Hisashige in 1875 was acquired by Mitsui in 1904 and became Shibaura Engineering Works. It merged with Tokyo Electric Power Co., which was founded as Hakunetsusha in 1890, in 1939 to become Tokyo Shibaura Electric, and in 1984 it became Toshiba. Along with Hitachi, it is one of Japan's leading general electric manufacturers. In addition to heavy electrical equipment, its products include information equipment, home appliances, medical equipment, and semiconductors. It leads the industry in nuclear power generation equipment. It also rose to the top in semiconductors, and its personal computer business is improving. It is a Mitsui group (see Mitsui Zaibatsu), but General Electric of the United States also invests in it. In 2001, it was the first in the world to commercialize HDD & DVD video recorders. In 2006, it acquired Westinghouse Electric of the United States for a total of 5.4 billion dollars to strengthen its nuclear power generation business. 1875年田中久重の開いた田中製造所（電信機工場）が1904年三井の手に入って芝浦製作所となり，1890年白熱舎として創立の東京電気と1939年合併して東京芝浦電気，さらに1984年東芝となる。日立製作所と並ぶ日本の代表的な総合電機メーカー。製品は重電部門以外に情報機器，家電をはじめ，医療機器・半導体など。原子力発電機器で業界をリード。半導体も首位浮上，パソコン事業は改善へ向かう。三井系（三井財閥参照）であるが米国のゼネラル・エレクトリックも出資。2001年，世界で初めてHDD＆DVDビデオレコーダーを商品化。2006年原子力発電事業を強化するために米国ウェスティング・ハウスを総額54億ドルで買収した。本社東京，工場府中，青梅など。世界同時不況で，2009年３月期売上げは大幅減少，最終損益は赤字，2010年３月期は，売上げはさらに落ち込んだが，最終損益は若干改善された。2011年３月期売上高６兆3985億円。資本金4399億円（2011）。売上構成（％）の概要は，デジタルプロダクツ33，電子デバイス20，社会インフラ33，家庭電器９，その他５。海外売上比率55％。
