... The color of the feathers and the pattern of the tail vary slightly depending on the distribution area, and it is divided into the following five subspecies. The northern pheasant P. s . scintillans is found in Shimane Prefecture and Honshu north of Hyogo Prefecture, and is slightly less red than the other subspecies. The Shikoku pheasant P. s . intermedius is found in most of Shikoku and southwestern Honshu west of Hyogo Prefecture and Shimane Prefecture, and has a darker base color of the tail feathers than the northern pheasant.
