The Royal Niger Company was a British company established in the 19th century to promote British commercial activities and territorial expansion in the lower Niger region of West Africa. During this period, trade in the lower Niger region was dominated by the National African Company, established by George Goldie (1846-1925), which merged various British companies. In 1886, the British government granted the company a monopoly on trade and governance in the Niger Delta, the Niger and Benue rivers, and the hinterland, and renamed it the Royal Niger Company.
