A former town in Kitakanbara County facing the Sea of Japan in northern Niigata Prefecture. Most of the town is reclaimed land from the former Shiunjigata Lagoon, and it is the center of rice production in the Echigo Plain, but in recent years it has also produced tobacco leaves, bulbs, and vegetables, and is also involved in livestock farming. The banks of the Kaji River, which runs through the southern part of the town, were famous for their cherry blossoms, but they were cut down after floods in 1966 and 1967. In May 2005, it was incorporated into Kajikawa Village, Kitakanbara County, and Shibata City. 26.70 km2 . Population: 8,113 (2003). Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
