A type of pottery produced in Crete during the Bronze Age. It is called Kamares pottery because a large number of this type of pottery were excavated from the Kamares Cave on the southern wall of Mount Ida in central Crete. The vessels include double-handled jugs, vases, stemmed cups, and sake cups commonly known as "coffee cups." Plants, marine animals, and geometric patterns are painted in red, white, and orange on a dark background. Small vessels have very thin walls and are also known as "eggshell pottery." It is believed to have been produced in the Second Middle Minoan Period, in palace workshops such as those at Knossos, and is highly regarded artistically. Many of the surviving examples are housed in the Heraklion Museum. [Nao Tomobe] [References] |Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
