Kamares Pottery - Kamaresutouki

A type of pottery produced in Crete during the Bronze Age. It is called Kamares pottery because a large number of this type of pottery were excavated from the Kamares Cave on the southern wall of Mount Ida in central Crete. The vessels include double-handled jugs, vases, stemmed cups, and sake cups commonly known as "coffee cups." Plants, marine animals, and geometric patterns are painted in red, white, and orange on a dark background. Small vessels have very thin walls and are also known as "eggshell pottery." It is believed to have been produced in the Second Middle Minoan Period, in palace workshops such as those at Knossos, and is highly regarded artistically. Many of the surviving examples are housed in the Heraklion Museum.

青銅器時代のクレタ産陶器の一形式。クレタ島中部のイダ山南壁のカマレス洞穴から同形式の陶器が多数出土したために、カマレス陶器とよばれる。器形は双把手(とって)をもつ水差し、壺(つぼ)、脚杯、「コーヒー・カップ」と通称される杯(さかずき)など。暗色の地に、赤、白、橙(だいだい)色で、植物、海棲(かいせい)動物、幾何学文などが描かれる。小型のものは器壁がきわめて薄く、「卵殻陶器」の別名がある。製作は中期ミノス第2期、クノッソスをはじめとする宮廷工房と推測され、芸術的に高く評価されている。遺例の多くはヘラクリオン美術館に収蔵されている。
