Adoratio (English spelling) [Latin]
Originally, the word meant worship of the gods. Religious rites held great importance in Roman society. Therefore, adoratio was something that should be taken into consideration in both national and private life, but during the imperial period, the emperor's adoratio carried more weight. Diocletian in particular followed the Persian example and demanded that people kneel before the emperor (proskynesis in Greek), and this kneeling also came to be called adoratio in Latin. 本来は神々の崇拝,礼拝を意味する語。宗教祭祀はローマ社会ではきわめて重要な意味をもった。したがってアドラティオは国家的な面でも私的な生活でも配慮されるべきものであったが,帝政期には皇帝のアドラティオが重みを増した。特にディオクレティアヌスはペルシアにならって皇帝の前での拝跪礼(ギリシア語でプロスキュネシス)を要求するに至ったが,この拝跪礼をもラテン語でアドラティオと呼ぶようになった。【松本 宣郎】
