Originally, the word meant worship of the gods. Religious rites held great importance in Roman society. Therefore, adoratio was something that should be taken into consideration in both national and private life, but during the imperial period, the emperor's adoratio carried more weight. Diocletian in particular followed the Persian example and demanded that people kneel before the emperor (proskynesis in Greek), and this kneeling also came to be called adoratio in Latin.
