A city in northeastern New Jersey, USA. Population: 226,000 (1994). It is located on a peninsula between the Hackensack and Hudson rivers. As it lies across the Hudson from New York City, it is the terminal for rail freight transport to and from the west, and also has a large truck terminal, making it a distribution center. There are various factories and wharves along the Hudson River, making it a port city. It is also connected to Manhattan, New York City, by the Holland Tunnel. アメリカ合衆国ニュージャージー州北東部の都市。人口22万6000(1994)。ハッケンサック川とハドソン川に挟まれた半島状の土地に位置する。ハドソン川を挟んでニューヨーク市の対岸にあるため,西方への,あるいは西方からの鉄道貨物輸送のターミナルであり,また広大なトラック・ターミナルもあり,流通の中心地である。ハドソン河岸には各種の工場・埠頭があり,港湾都市でもある。また,ニューヨーク市マンハッタンとはホランド・トンネルで結ばれている。
