...There are a few possible origins for the word rice. One is the Sanskrit vrīhi, which appears in the Vedas, the oldest Indian classics, and all European words meaning rice, including Arabic uruz and Latin oryza, are said to be of the same lineage. It is also thought that the Japanese word uruchi may have the same origin, and some believe that it is a corrupted version of the sine of urushi-ne, which was used in Kyushu and Shikoku.
