In the southern part of the prefecture, the Kihara clan, who claimed the Minamoto family name in Mashiki County, was influential, and in the mid-12th century, they launched a fierce anti-kokuga movement, to the point where it was said that "Hiromi (Kihara) alone was responsible for all the mayhem throughout the country." The Tametomo legend, centered on Mt. Kihara (Mt. Karuiwai), is thought to have been created against this backdrop. …
