Adrar des Iforas

This mountainous region is located in the south of the Sahara Desert, in the northeastern part of the Republic of Mali, and is known for its many rock carvings. The carvings are not found on cliffs, but on the surfaces of individual rocks, and their subjects include elephants, hippos, chariot horses, camels, and people. Ancient Saharan and Tifinagh scripts are also found. The elephant and hippopotamus carvings are the oldest, and are thought to date back several thousand years when the area was still humid, and were made up to after the 12th century. The main ruins include Arli, Ibdekene, Ratrat, Idjounhan, In Frit, Talohos, In Tadeïni, and Es Souk.
