A philosophical novel by the French thinker and writer Voltaire. Published in 1759. Subtitled "Optimism." A masterpiece of 18th-century satire, the novel is both a critique of Leibniz's theory of pre-established harmony and a response to the issue of God's providence, which became a source of debate with Rousseau at the time of the Lisbon earthquake (1755). The protagonist, Candide, encounters many difficulties and falls into ruin many times, but he does not give in and gradually comes to understand the joy of working, eventually reaching the point where he realizes, "We must cultivate our own fields." The author's scathing criticism of the politics, society, and ideology of the time is expressed in the description of the protagonist's fate.
