Polytrichum commune - Polytrichum commune

A species of moss in the Polytrichum family. It grows on moist ground in slightly shady areas and is 10 to 20 centimeters tall. The stems are wiry and hard, and the leaves are about 1 centimeter long and lanceolate. There are about 10 species of Polytrichum, including Polytrichum formosum, Polytrichum formosum, and Polytrichum formosum, all of which are very similar, but are differentiated by whether the capsules of the sporophytes are cylindrical (Polytrichum genus) or prismatic (Polytrichum genus). It is widely used as an important component of moss gardens. It is widely distributed in the Northern Hemisphere, and can be found throughout Japan.

コケ植物スギゴケ科の1種。やや日陰地の湿った地上に生え、高さ10～20センチメートル。茎は針金状で硬く、葉は長さ1センチメートル前後で、披針(ひしん)形。ウマスギゴケの仲間にはオオスギゴケ、コスギゴケ、セイタカスギゴケなど10種ばかりあり、いずれもよく似ているが、胞子体の蒴(さく)が円柱状になるか（コスギゴケ属）、角柱状になるか（スギゴケ属）で分けられる。苔庭(こけにわ)の重要な構成種として広く利用される。北半球に広く分布し、日本では全国各地に及ぶ。
