Also known as stratified copper-bearing iron sulfide deposits or Besshi-type deposits. An important copper resource. A layered or lenticular deposit consisting of dense, massive ores, mainly pyrite and pyrrhotite, always containing some chalcopyrite, that coherently exists in rock strata. Some also contain significant amounts of sphalerite or galena. Most are found in metamorphic belts. The origin is thought to be the metamorphism of ore layers formed by undersea volcanic activity. The Rammelsberg mine in Germany and the Slitelma mine in Norway are well-known examples. In Japan, the Besshi mine and Sazare mine in Ehime Prefecture, the Shirataki mine in Kochi Prefecture, and the Hitachi mine in Ibaraki Prefecture are good examples, but they are no longer in operation. → Related topics Ore deposits | Ore layers | Metamorphic deposits Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
