Heptacarpus geniculatus

Japanese: コシマガリモエビ（英語表記）Heptacarpus geniculatus

This shrimp belongs to the Crustacean family, Pomacentridae, and lives in shallow sea eelgrass beds (illustration). It is 5 cm long. Its color can vary from bright green to yellowish brown depending on the color of the seaweed in its habitat. Its rostrum is long, about 1.5 times the length of its cephalothorax, and is nearly horizontal, with 5-7 spines on the rear half of the upper edge (the rear two are on the cephalothorax), and 7-9 spines along the entire lower edge from the front of the eyes. The dorsal protuberance of the third abdominal segment is knob-like, and the rear part bends from this point, becoming nearly a right angle when dead. The first and second thoracic legs have pincers, and the arm segment of the second thoracic leg is divided into seven.

甲殻綱モエビ科のエビで，浅海のアマモ場にすんでいる（イラスト）。体長5cm。生息場所の海草の色に応じて鮮やかな緑色から黄褐色まで変異がある。額角は長く，頭胸甲長の約1.5倍，ほぼ水平で，上縁の後半部に5～7本(後方の2本が頭胸甲上)，下縁に眼の前方から全縁にわたって7～9本のとげがある。第3腹節の背隆起が瘤状で，ここから後方が折れ曲がっており，死ぬととくに直角に近くなる。第1,2胸脚ははさみをもち，第2胸脚の腕節は七つに分かれている。
