Cardigan (English spelling)

Cardigan (English spelling)
A town in southwest Ceredigion, west Wales, UK. It is called Aberteifi in Welsh. It is located about 125 km west-northwest of Cardiff, about 5 km upstream from the mouth of the Tybe River, which flows into Cardigan Bay. The town was formed around a Norman castle built in the 12th century, and the arch bridge over the Tybe River is said to date back to 1136. In 1176, the first Eisteddfod (Welsh arts festival) was held at the castle, with 30,000 people attending. It received its first royal charter in 1284 and developed as a market town. Although small, the port flourished as a seaport trading with Ireland until the 19th century. With beautiful coastlines and the valley of the Tybe River nearby, it has developed today mainly as a tourist and health resort. Population: 4,203 (2001).

cardigan
Cardigan

A simple box-shaped knitwear jacket with a front opening. It is normally buttoned and collarless, with a round or V-shaped collar, and the front opening and collar are trimmed into a continuous strip. It is usually long-sleeved, but some women's and children's jackets have short sleeves. The name is said to come from the fact that the British Earl of Cardigan wore this type of jacket during the Crimean War in the late 19th century. It was popular because it was easy to put on and take off, and was comfortable to wear, and its simple shape made it easy to produce ready-made clothes, making it one of the most representative clothing styles of the 20th century.
