Austrian composer. Born in Bern, Switzerland, he worked at an opera house with the aim of becoming a conductor, and in 1941 he studied under composer Blacher in Berlin. In 1944 he attracted attention with his ballet music for Princess Turandot, and gained international acclaim with two operas (both with the help of his teacher Blacher on the libretto): the expressionistically colored Death of Danton (based on an original by Büchner, premiered in 1947) and The Trial (based on an original by Kafka, premiered in 1953), which reflected his experience of imprisonment during the Nazi era. He continued to create works, mainly operas, and gradually shifted to a neoclassical style of writing. In orchestral works such as the Philadelphia Symphony (1960), he showed a keen sense of instrumentation, and the innovative rhythmic processing inherited from his teacher Blacher enhanced the performance effect. He was a professor of composition at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna from 1965 to 1972.

オーストリアの作曲家。スイスのベルンに生まれ，指揮者を志して歌劇場で活動ののち，1941年ベルリンで作曲家ブラッハーに師事。1944年バレエ音楽《トゥーランドット姫》で注目され，表現主義的な色彩の濃い《ダントンの死》（ビュヒナー原作，1947年初演），ナチス時代の投獄体験を反映した《審判》（カフカ原作，1953年初演）の２つのオペラ（いずれも師ブラッハーが台本に協力）で国際的な評価を得る。その後もオペラを中心に創作活動を続け，次第に新古典主義的な書法に移行。《フィラデルフィア交響曲》（1960年）などの管弦楽曲では楽器法に冴(さ)えをみせ，師ブラッハー譲りの斬新(ざんしん)なリズム処理が演奏効果を高めている。1965年−1972年ウィーン音楽大学作曲科教授。
