Kanji education

…In October 1981, the Cabinet announced that 1,945 kanji characters would be used in common use.

The teaching and learning of kanji is quite different in method and nature from the teaching and learning of other characters, such as kana or the English alphabet. The main reason for this is the uniqueness of the kanji characters themselves and the uniqueness of the way they are adopted in Japan (for example, the kun readings).
