They live a planktonic life, similar to that of the Spionidae polychaete. About 30 species are known from Japan, including the horned burrowing beetle and the Iijimasu burrowing beetle. The body is disc-shaped, bilaterally symmetrical, and up to about 10 mm in diameter. Some species have long tentacles on the periphery.
