1890‐1965 Austrian artist. Born in Vienna, he participated in the avant-garde art movement of the early 20th century as a theater architect. In 1926 he moved to New York, where he was active in a wide range of fields, including stage design, display design, painting, sculpture, and poetry. He viewed the visual arts, including architecture, from an environmental perspective, and was critical of modern architecture, presenting his original housing design, the Endless House (1949-60).
