In 1757, the western half of the state was separated to become São José da Barra do Rio Negro, then Rio Negro, and after the establishment of the Republic (1889), it became the state of Amazonas. Many of its borders are in the area, and in 1943, for defense reasons, Rio Branco (now Roraima) and Guaporé (now Rondônia) were incorporated into the Amazonas territory. However, the state still shares borders with Venezuela, Colombia, and Peru, and these countries have administrative districts of the same name. Near the border with Venezuela, it borders the Guiana Highlands and contains Mount Neblina (3,014m), the highest point in Brazil, but most of the state is the so-called Upper Amazonia, or Amazon Basin, and is a tropical rainforest with major rivers such as the Amazon River, its tributaries the Rio Negro and the Madeira River flowing down it. In the state capital, Manaus, the average annual temperature is 26.7°C, the maximum temperature is around 32°C, the annual precipitation is 2,243mm, and there is a short dry season from July to September. *Some of the terminology explanations that mention "Guapole" are listed below.
