A surface treatment method for steel established by American CW Parker in 1915. Iron with a cleaned surface is immersed in a solution containing acidic zinc phosphate, phosphoric acid, and an oxidizing agent at room temperature to just over 100°C, forming an insoluble zinc or zinc-iron tertiary phosphate film on the iron surface. During the wire drawing process, the wire is passed through a phosphate bath to form a phosphate coating, which is used as a lubricant for processing and also helps prevent oxidation. Currently, it is indispensable as a paint base for painted steel sheets and plated steel sheets, and in Japan, 15 million tons of steel are phosphate treated each year.

1915年にアメリカ人 C. W.パーカーが確立した鉄鋼の表面処理方法。表面を清浄にした鉄を，常温から 100℃強までの酸性リン酸亜鉛，リン酸および酸化剤などを含む溶液に浸漬し，鉄表面に不溶性の亜鉛または亜鉛-鉄の第三リン酸塩被膜を形成させる。線引きの工程で，線をリン酸塩浴にくぐらせてリン酸塩被膜をつけ，加工の潤滑剤として利用すると同時に酸化防止に役立てる。現在では，塗装を施される鋼板，メッキ鋼板の塗装下地として不可欠で，日本でも毎年 1500万tの鋼材がリン酸塩処理される。
