A moth belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the family Arctiidae. The wingspan of males is about 40 mm, while females are about 50 mm. Sexes differ in size and color. Males have black-brown wings with a row of black markings. Females have numerous black markings on a yellowish-white background. The abdomen is reddish-yellow, but males are blackish. They emerge once a year, with adults appearing around September. They often fly to lights. They are found from Hokkaido to Yakushima Island and on the Chinese mainland. The larvae are blackish hairy caterpillars with a row of thin white markings on their backs and orange-yellow markings on each segment. They parasitize many trees, including chestnuts, oaks, willows, and cherry trees, but are known as pests of mulberry trees. When young, they live in groups, spinning silk to build nests. In July, they make thin cocoons with brown hairs between the leaves and pupate. They overwinter as young larvae.
