Hazel grouse - Ezoraicho (English spelling)

It is a bird of the order Phasianidae, family Phasianidae, subfamily Ramphastinae, class of Aves. It was given this Japanese name because it only lives in Hokkaido in Japan. It is widely distributed in the temperate and subarctic zones of Eurasia. It is about 35 centimeters long. It has a stocky body, its whole body covered in a mottled pattern of gray, white, and reddish brown, and males have a large black spot on their throat. It is the same color in summer and winter. It roams the forest and eats seeds, buds, insects, etc. When danger approaches, it flies away making a loud noise and perches on a tree branch several meters above. It builds a nest in the shade on the ground and lays 6 to 10 white eggs.

鳥綱キジ目キジ科ライチョウ亜科の鳥。日本では北海道にのみ生息しているのでこの和名がある。ユーラシアの温帯と亜寒帯に広く分布する。全長約35センチメートル。ずんぐりした体つきで、全身が灰色、白色、赤褐色のまだら模様で覆われ、雄はのどに黒い大きな斑(はん)がある。夏冬同色。森林の中を歩き回りながら、種子、木の芽、昆虫などを食べる。危険が迫ると、大きな音をたてて飛び、数メートルの高さにある木の枝に止まる。地上の物陰に巣をつくり、白色の卵を6～10個産む。
