A city in southeastern Colorado, USA. Located at the eastern foot of the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains, along the upper Arkansas River. At an elevation of 1,428m, it is a commercial, industrial, and transportation center. A fort was built in 1806. With the opening of the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad in 1872, the development of nearby coalfields progressed, and the steel industry flourished. In 1921, the city suffered major damage from a flood of the Arkansas River. In the vast irrigated areas nearby, pasture grass, onions, pumpkins, melons, and cucumbers are cultivated. An Army arsenal and the Colorado Steel Company are located near the city. It is also home to the University of Southern Colorado (established in 1933). Population: 106,595 (2010).
