An acute, febrile, infectious disease caused by infection with Clostridium chauvoei in cattle and, rarely, sheep and goats. Asymptomatic emphysema occurs in fleshy areas. It is particularly prevalent in young grazing cattle, and tends to occur sporadically in certain areas. In Japan, it is most prevalent in Kyushu, Chugoku, Kinki, and Kanto, and also occurs sporadically in some areas of Hokkaido. The immunity provided by the Japanese black jaundice vaccine lasts for about 6 months. Hyperimmune serum is used for treatment, but penicillin is also effective in the early stages.
