An ancient Greek word meaning "workplace." It is used regardless of the type or scale of work carried out there, but in economic history it is often used to refer specifically to either (1) the ore-dressing plant at the Laurion silver mine in Athens, or (2) the handicraft manufacturing plants in Athens that employed a relatively large number of slaves. The meaning of (2) in particular is important in relation to the issue of how to evaluate the economic development of ancient Greece and Rome, which has been actively discussed since the late 19th century, mainly in German academic circles.
