An ancient Greek word meaning "workplace." It is used regardless of the type or scale of work carried out there, but in economic history it is often used to refer specifically to either (1) the ore-dressing plant at the Laurion silver mine in Athens, or (2) the handicraft manufacturing plants in Athens that employed a relatively large number of slaves. The meaning of (2) in particular is important in relation to the issue of how to evaluate the economic development of ancient Greece and Rome, which has been actively discussed since the late 19th century, mainly in German academic circles. 〈仕事場〉を表す古代ギリシア語。そこで営まれる仕事の種類や規模にかかわりなく使用されるが,経済史のうえでは,(1)アテナイのラウリオン銀山における選鉱場,(2)同じくアテナイの比較的多数の奴隷を使役する手工業の製作場のいずれかに意義を限定して用いることが多い。なかでも(2)の意味が,19世紀末以降ドイツの学界を中心に活発に論議された,古代ギリシア・ローマにおける経済の発展をいかに評価するかの問題との関連で重要である。
