1886‐1921 A counter-revolutionary soldier active in Siberia and Mongolia during the civil war following the Russian Revolution. Born in Estonia. He initially served under GM Semenov in the Transbaikal region, but then split off and invaded Outer Mongolia in October 1920, occupying Urga (now Ulaanbaatar) in February of the following year, attempting to restore Outer Mongolian autonomy and turn it into a base for counter-revolution. The Soviet government, which had received a request for assistance from Mongolian revolutionary groups at the time, ultimately decided to intervene militarily following his invasion, which marked the beginning of the Mongolian Revolution.
