Roman Fyodorovich Ungern of Shternberg

1886‐1921
A counter-revolutionary soldier active in Siberia and Mongolia during the civil war following the Russian Revolution. Born in Estonia. He initially served under GM Semenov in the Transbaikal region, but then split off and invaded Outer Mongolia in October 1920, occupying Urga (now Ulaanbaatar) in February of the following year, attempting to restore Outer Mongolian autonomy and turn it into a base for counter-revolution. The Soviet government, which had received a request for assistance from Mongolian revolutionary groups at the time, ultimately decided to intervene militarily following his invasion, which marked the beginning of the Mongolian Revolution.

ロシア革命後の内戦期にシベリア，モンゴルで活動した反革命派軍人。エストニアに生まれる。はじめザバイカル地方でG.M.セミョーノフの配下にいたが分かれ，1920年10月外モンゴルへ侵入，翌年2月ウルガ(現，ウランバートル)を占領，外モンゴル自治の復活と反革命の拠点化を図った。当時モンゴル革命グループより援助要請をうけていたソビエト政府は，彼の侵入にともない，最終的に軍事介入を決断し，これがモンゴル革命への契機となった。
