Originally, they were responsible for keeping the keys to the storehouse and handling the receipts and disbursements. They were also written as Kagitori. Under the Ritsuryo Code, two Tenyaku (seniors) were placed in the Ministry of Central Affairs, and they were read as Kagi no Tsukasa and Kaitori. There were also Kagitori as guardians in the provinces and at the Sokosho. In the Middle Ages, there were Kagitori at shrines and temples such as Usa Hachimangu Shrine, Hizen Kawakami Shrine, and Chikuzen Kanzeonji Temple. In the Jodo Shinshu sect, the Kagitori who opened and closed the founder's mizushi (shrine altar) was also called Kinban. Kagitori could also be found in manors, such as Bingo Ota Manor, which was the domain of Mount Koya, as one of the manor officials. In the early modern period, the person in charge of managing the gokura (storehouses) was called Kagitori. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
