1903‐72 Soviet novelist. He wrote reportage for Pravda and other newspapers, but made his debut with the novella Krako (1934). He quickly established his literary reputation with his novella Volokolamsk Highway (1943-44), which depicts the defense of Moscow in 1941, when the Soviet Union was in dire straits at the start of World War II. The novellas A Few Days and General Panfilov's Reserves (both 1960) are sequels. Many of his works are documentary, and his novel The Life of Berezhkov (1956) also belongs to this series.
