A Canadian underwater working dog and family dog. It was named after the island of Newfoundland on the east coast of Canada. It is said that the original breed was a cross between the native St. John's Newfoundland and the giant Spanish Pyrenean Mountain Dog. Of all dog breeds, it is the most skilled swimmer and has the greatest endurance, and in the 18th and 19th centuries it was used as a mascot by sailors on the open seas, rescuing sailors thrown overboard and contacting shore, leaving behind many stories of its existence.
