[Died] December 16, 1966. A Beijing Peking Opera actor. Son of a Beijing teahouse. At the age of eight, he entered the Fu Lian Cheng School of Acting (actor training school), first studying Wu Sheng and later the Tan School of Lao Sheng. Due to a temporary throat injury, he excelled in lines and mannerisms rather than singing. He made unique and gradual improvements to the traditional Lao Sheng arts, such as enthusiastically staging new plays, and founded the Ma School. From around 1930, he was active at the forefront for a long time as the leading Lao Sheng of the Northern School (the Beijing School as opposed to the Shanghai School). His hit roles include Kong Ming in Borrowing the East Wind and Xiao En in Killing the Fish.

京劇の俳優。北京の茶館の息子。8歳のとき富連成科班 (俳優養成所) に入って，初めは武生，のち譚派老生を学んだ。一時のどを痛めたため，歌唱よりもせりふと所作に秀でた。新作劇を意欲的に上演するなど，伝統の老生芸に個性的，漸進的な改良を加え，馬派を創始。 1930年頃から北派 (上海派に対して北京派をいう) の老生筆頭として長く第一線で活躍。『借東風』の孔明，『打魚殺家』の蕭恩などが当り役。
