[Live] Guangxu 26(1900).1.11. Shaanxi [Died] December 16, 1966. A Beijing Peking Opera actor. Son of a Beijing teahouse. At the age of eight, he entered the Fu Lian Cheng School of Acting (actor training school), first studying Wu Sheng and later the Tan School of Lao Sheng. Due to a temporary throat injury, he excelled in lines and mannerisms rather than singing. He made unique and gradual improvements to the traditional Lao Sheng arts, such as enthusiastically staging new plays, and founded the Ma School. From around 1930, he was active at the forefront for a long time as the leading Lao Sheng of the Northern School (the Beijing School as opposed to the Shanghai School). His hit roles include Kong Ming in Borrowing the East Wind and Xiao En in Killing the Fish.
