Founded in 1382 by Bishop William of Wykeham, this is one of the oldest public schools in England. It was established to provide preparatory education for students entering New College, Oxford, where he was rector. Its official name is St. Mary College of Winchester near Winchester. The original building, which is still in use today, is interesting from an architectural perspective, and its educational system based on self-governance and independence was used as a model when Henry VI founded Eton College, and was considered a typical example of English public schools.
