Ushio [Hot Spring] - Ushio

Japanese: 海潮[温泉] - うしお

A hot spring in Daito Town, Ohara County, eastern Shimane Prefecture. The hot spring is a mountain hot spring that springs up in the upper reaches of the Aka River, a tributary of the Hii River, and has a saltwater spring of 49°C. It is a historic hot spring area that is mentioned in the Izumo no Kuni Fudoki and is said to have been discovered in the Nara period. It is known for Kaicho Jindai Kagura, which incorporates the forms of Noh and Noh songs. The Aka River is a famous spot for fireflies, and the Kaicho katsura tree, which is about 14 meters in circumference at its base, has been designated a natural monument. At the end of the 19th century, it was the base of the prefecture's charcoal manufacturing industry, and there was a charcoal manufacturing training center there, and during World War II, a branch of the Army Hospital was also located here.

島根県東部，大原郡大東町にある温泉。斐伊川支流の赤川上流域に湧出する山あいの温泉で，ボウ硝泉，49℃。《出雲国風土記》にも記され，奈良時代の発見といわれる歴史の古い温泉地で，能や謡曲の形式をとり入れた海潮神代神楽で知られる。赤川はホタルの名所であり，根元の周囲約14mの海潮のカツラは天然記念物に指定されている。19世紀末には県製炭業の拠点で，製炭法伝習所があり，第2次世界大戦中は陸軍病院分院もおかれていた。
