In shallow, small-scale mines, the necessary amount of air can often be obtained by natural ventilation caused by the temperature difference between inside and outside the mine, but as the mine becomes deeper and larger, a large amount of air is required, and mechanical ventilation using fans (also called forced ventilation) becomes essential. The purpose of ventilation is to supply fresh air into the mine and expel dirty air, as well as to regulate the temperature inside the mine.
