Bartolomeo (English spelling) Fra Bartolommeo

Bartolomeo (English spelling) Fra Bartolommeo

A Florentine painter of the Italian High Renaissance. His real name was Baccio della Porta. Born in Soffignano, he began his apprenticeship in the workshop of Cosimo Rosselli in 1485. The Annunciation in Volterra Cathedral is thought to be a collaborative work with Mariotto Albertinelli, a painter in the same workshop. Heavily influenced by Savonarola, he joined the Dominican Order in 1500 after Savonarola's burning at the stake and stopped painting for a while, but in 1504 he returned to paint The Vision of St. Bernard (Uffizi Gallery). After a trip to Venice in 1508, he gained a position as a leading painter, as Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, and Raphael were away from Florence. In 1812, he painted The Marriage of Saint Catherine (Gallery of the Accademia, Florence), which established a solemn style with simplified monumental architecture, well-balanced figure placement, and the application of the sfumato technique. In 1814, he visited Rome for a short time and studied the frescoes of Michelangelo and Raphael in the Vatican. His St. John the Evangelist at the Palazzo Pitti shows influence from the prophet's figures. He died in Florence.
