...A public facility for exhibiting and studying live aquatic animals. In recent years, many of these are called aquariums or aqua museums. There are currently over 100 aquariums in Japan alone, the most in a single country in the world, and there are probably over 500 aquariums in the world.

Human curiosity has been directed towards many different animals, but there has also been a great desire to see life in water; there are records of fish being kept in containers filled with water from ancient Babylonian Sumer and from the Zhou dynasty in China, and many varieties of goldfish were developed during the Song dynasty to be kept in aquariums and ponds.
