A long, narrow peninsula in northwestern Mexico. It is about 1,200 km long, 48-240 km wide, and has an area of about 140,000 km2 . It has a mountainous, dry terrain with few vegetation. Administratively, it is divided into the states of Baja California Norte (capital Mexicali) and Baja California Sur (capital La Paz). Many Americans visited the peninsula during the Prohibition era (1920-1933). Since the 1970s, resort development has progressed, and outdoor sports such as fishing, diving, and yachting are popular. Whale watching is known in the lagoons and small coves on the Pacific coast. Jesuit churches from the 17th and 18th centuries remain in various locations.
