Romanians are a people born from the interbreeding of the ancient indigenous Dacians and the conquering Romans, but culturally they have been deeply influenced by the surrounding South Slavic, Greek and Byzantine cultures, and their oral literature, such as ballads and folk tales, share many elements with the Balkan countries. Famous ballads include "Miorița," which sings of the death of a young shepherd, "Meşter Manole," which is based on a human sacrifice legend common to the Balkan region, and a song about a hajduk (righteous thief). There is also a rich tradition of fantasy folk tales and lyric songs (doinǎ), which feature the activities of so-called "beautiful boys."
