A type of patterned fabric. Nutori (繡取) is originally a term used in embroidery, and refers to the process of sewing a pattern onto a part of the fabric using a separate thread. Thus, 'nutori-ori' refers to a fabric that looks like it has been woven, and its distinctive feature is that the colored threads (enuki) that represent the pattern are used back and forth only in the areas necessary for the pattern, and do not run through the entire width of the fabric like enuki in other brocades. With this technique, it is easy to use several different colored enuki, and because they are woven in partially, the fabric itself does not become thick or heavy despite the number of colors, like brocade.
